School Improvement Plan

It is time for CMS to revise and update our School Improvement Plan. This is a school-wide and community effort. The plan will be submitted to the state in the spring, however we have already begun the process! The Tennessee School Improvement Plan (TSIP) is like a “lesson plan” for schools, used much the same as a good teacher uses their own lesson plan… to reflect on where you’ve been, determine where you are, and decide what you need to do to accomplish your goals.

We began with a series of surveys and one of those was a Parent Survey. We wanted to know what you thought of your child's school. What are we doing well and what do we need to improve on? Our goal was to have 100% parent involvement in completing the parent survey. We will post the results of this survey sometime in the beginning of August so that you can see the results of what parents, faculty, and students think of Cherokee Middle School.

With the accountability demands of No Child Left Behind and other federal and state mandates, our school’s plan will serve as the accountability document for measuring adequate yearly progress (AYP).  Being able to identify areas of strengths and needs at the school level will assist us in designing strategies to increase student performance for all our students at Cherokee Middle School.  It is extremely important that we utilized our School Improvement Plan as a tool for meeting individual needs for all students.

Field Trips for the 2010 - 2011 School Year

6th Grade - Great Smoky Mountain Institute at Tremont: The 6th grade trip to Tremont is a fabulous experience. The children have an amazing time! They learn so much during their week exploring outdoors in natures classroom. The trip is a huge success due to the meticulous pre-planning by Mr. Nathan Shell and Mrs. Kim Nickell, the two 6th grade Science teachers. The success of the trip is also due to the amazing parent chaperons who give of their time to assist, teach, and be exemplary role models for the students. The staff at Tremont have said that CMS 6th graders are some of the most well behaved students they have at Tremont. To find out more about Tremont and their summer camps, please visit their website at www.gsmit.org

8th Grade - Washington, D.C: Cost per student is $500 for the 4 day trip. Students present the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, tour many of the museums, National Monuments, and pack as much as possible into these 4 memorable days.
